When washing our hairbrush, the key is to not let our wooden or bamboo hairbrushes soak in water because this can cause them to crack or splinter. The process for cleaning out hairbrushes is simple and all we must do is wash them, then rinse them, and finally place our brush with bristles down to dry overnight.

You can do this using a comb or something small and sharp, like a little pair of scissors. Get close to the hairbrush and in between the bristles, pull up and this will catch some of the hairs. Do this a few times to remove as much as possible. Your hairbrush is much more effective when there is less hair caught up in the head.

Fill a bowl with about half a cup (120ml) of hot water, then add 5 drops of tea tree oil and mix together. You have now made a natural disinfecting cleaner to clean your bamboo hairbrush.

Keep an old toothbrush for this job. Dip your toothbrush in the solution and start cleaning the bristles from the base of the head to the top of the brush. Be careful not to scrub too hard, as you do not want to damage your hairbrush.

If you are struggling to get rid of any of the dirt on your hairbrush, fill a spray bottle with the tea tree mixture and lightly spray this onto your hairbrush to soften it. Then either use your toothbrush or a clean cloth to remove it.

Fill a spray bottle with warm water and mist very lightly over the hairbrush. Make sure to be careful and use a clean cloth to wipe this water and any remaining oil and dirt off of the hairbrush.

If you have added a bit too much water, just pat the hairbrush onto a dry cloth and this should help to remove any excess liquid.

Place your hairbrush, bristle side down, onto a dry towel or cloth and leave for about 15-30 minutes. This is to make sure that any water that was used to clean it, is not sitting at the base of the bristles and so will prolong the life of your hairbrush.
